A heartfelt guide to writing a card that captures it all
Do you struggle to write what you really feel into a Mother's Day card?
To help you write from the heart (without the overwhelm) we’ve put together 5 simple and soulful tips, so you can fill your Mother’s Day card with words of love, gratitude, and a little magic.
Whether you're writing to your Mum, Nanna or step-mum you adore, your bestie who’s just started her motherhood journey, or other miracle-working mother figures in your life — your heartfelt words will create a treasured keepsake they’ll cherish forever.
1. Pause & Reflect
Before you put pen to paper, take a quiet moment and tune into your heart. Ask yourself:
- What does she mean to me?
- How do I want her to feel when she reads this?
- What’s one thing I’ve never told her… but should?
2. Beautiful Brainstorm
Using these thought provokers, let the memories, moments and feelings flow freely:
- List 10 positive and empowering adjectives that describe her
- Recall a magic moment or favourite memory you’ve shared
- What are you most proud of her for?
- How has she inspired or changed your life?
- How do you feel when you’re together?
- Think about the role she plays in your life - what are you most grateful for?
Tip: Looking through recent or older photos can help unlock stories and memories to help you find the words waiting to be written.
3. Draft it First
Take your thoughts from the brainstorm above, or use these writing prompts here to help draft what’s in your heart. Just let the words flow out, and then you can shape it into your final message.
- I love how you…
- As a Mum/Aunty/Nanna you are…
- I’m grateful for the way you…
- You’ve taught me that …
- 3 things I admire most about you are…
- I’ll never forget when...
- You’ve made a difference in my life by…
- I really want you to know that…
Tip: Once you’ve got your final version, write it onto paper folded to the same size as your card - that way you’ll know how much space you have to layout your message.
4. Words of Admiration
Still feeling a bit stuck? Try one of our favourite tricks and simply write down words or adjectives that reflect who she is and how she shows up in your life. It can be a page full of individual words, or a beautiful sentence or two like these to encapsulate your feelings...
“Mum you are strong, loving, hilarious, wise, generous and soulful. A living beam of light who shines on us all.”
“Granny, you are the most energetic, extraordinary, eclectic and earth-wise human. I love how you make every one of us feel so uniquely special.”
5. Finish with a Wish
Think about her hopes and dreams and wrap up your final thoughts with a loving wish…
“May this year bring new dreams, deeper peace, and all the beauty you deserve.”
“Today is your time to relax, restore… and reach for ALL the chocolate.”
“I hope this year brings you calm among the chaos (and a full night of uninterrupted sleep).”
Above all else...just be you.
Overall, don't get hung up on it being 'perfect'. You don’t need fancy words - just your words. Whether it’s a short note or a full letter, let your honesty and love shine through. That’s what’s will make her day truly magical, and what will make your card a cherished keepsake.
So, it's time to pick up that pen, and pour your heart onto the page. We know she's going to love it.
